Homemade Soft Pretzels: A Household Favourite

There’s something magical about the smell of fresh-baked pretzels wafting through the kitchen — warm, golden, and just the right amount of salty. At Little Micro Homesteader, we love recipes that bring the whole family together, and these homemade soft pretzels are a perfect weekend treat.

Whether you’re prepping for a cozy movie night, a backyard gathering, or just want to surprise your little ones with something special, this recipe is simple, satisfying, and full of homestead charm.

---

Ingredients

Dough

• 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water

• 2 1/4 tsp instant (quick-rise) yeast

• 1 tsp salt

• 1 tbsp granulated sugar

• 4 cups bread flour (plus 1–2 tbsp extra if needed)

Baking Soda Bath

• 8 cups water

• 4 tbsp baking soda

Egg Wash

• 1 large egg yolk

• 1 tbsp water

Topping

• 2 tbsp pretzel salt

---

Instructions

1. Make the Dough

In a stand mixer bowl, whisk together water, yeast, salt, and sugar. Let sit 1–2 minutes. Add flour and mix with a dough hook on low until combined. Increase to medium speed and mix for 4–5 minutes until the dough is soft and smooth. If sticky, add a bit more flour.

Prefer to knead by hand? Mix until just combined, then knead on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes.

Shape into a ball, cover with a clean towel, and rest 15–20 minutes.

2. Prep the Oven and Bath

Preheat oven to 450ºF and position the rack just above center. Line two baking sheets with silicone mats or lightly sprayed parchment paper. In a large pot, bring water and baking soda to a boil. Mix the egg wash and set aside.

3. Shape the Pretzels

Divide dough into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a 24-inch rope, form a teardrop shape, twist the ends once, and fold them down to create the classic pretzel shape. Press gently to seal and place on the baking sheets.

4. Baking Soda Bath

Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then remove with a strainer and return to the baking sheet. Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with pretzel salt.

5. Bake

Bake for 12–14 minutes until golden brown and glossy. Cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
